May 11, 2007: Iraq War Opponents Gain Ground In House Votes
The anti-war movement continued to gain ground this week as the House of Representatives conducted two important votes on the Iraq War. These votes reflect the American public’s widespread opposition to the war. According to a CNN poll released this week, Americans favor a timeline for withdrawal 57 to 41 percent.

May 1, 2007: Bush Set To Extend Iraq War On Fourth Anniversary of
Four years after boastfully declaring that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, President Bush is set to veto a $124 billion Supplemental Appropriations bill that would bring American soldiers home. This press release includes retired Generals comparing the Iraq conflict to Vietnam and Afghanistan and an updated analysis of war casualties, costs, terrorism levels, and troop levels.

Apr 24, 2007: The Vote on the Supplemental Appropriations Conference Report
The vote on the Fiscal 2007 Supplemental Appropriations Conference Report will be difficult for those who would like to see an early end to the war. A number of Representatives voted for the bill the first time with substantial misgivings. Now the House language on Iraq has been weakened to accommodate the very narrow majority in the Senate.

Mar 29, 2007: Council for a Livable World Applauds Passage of Supplemental, Notes Ballooning War Costs
Council for a Livable World today applauded the Senate for passing an Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill that sets a goal of March 2008 for withdrawing most American soldiers from Iraq. The Supplemental was approved 51-47 with Sens. Hagel (NE) and Smith (OR) the only Republicans voting in favor.

Mar 27, 2007: Council for a Livable World Applauds Defeat of Cochran Amendment
Council for a Livable World today applauded the Senate for defeating a Sen. Cochran (R-MS) amendment to the Supplemental Appropriations bill that would have removed language mandating a March 2008 “goal” for withdrawing most American soldiers from Iraq. The Cochran amendment was defeated 48-50.

Mar 23, 2007: Council for a Livable World Applauds Passage of House Supplemental Bill
Council for a Livable World today applauded the House of Representatives for passing the Supplemental Appropriations bill mandating the redeployment of most American troops from Iraq by August 2008. The final vote was 218-212.

Council for a Livable World today called for House Democrats to vote “Yea” on the Supplemental Appropriations bill scheduled to come up for a vote on Thursday.

Mar 16, 2007: Council for a Livable World Applauds Senate
Council for a Livable World applauded the Senate for holding an important vote today on the war in Iraq. The resolution offered by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) would have required President Bush to begin a troop withdrawal from Iraq within 120 days of adoption while establishing a goal of pulling all combat troops out by March 31, 2008.

Feb 17, 2007: Council for a Livable World Condemns Senate
Council for a Livable World condemned the Senate’s refusal today to hold a substantive debate on President Bush’s effort to escalate U.S. troop levels in Iraq. The Senate voted 56-34 Saturday on a motion to invoke cloture on S. 574, which is identical to the resolution just passed in the House and expresses support for U.S. troops while criticizing President Bush’s proposal to commit an additional 21,500 combat soldiers to Iraq. The final vote fell 4 short of the 60 votes needed to invoke cloture and move past ongoing procedural obstructionism by Senate Republicans.

Feb 16, 2007: Council for a Livable World Applauds Bipartisan Condemnation of Bush
Today the House of Representatives passed a resolution opposing President Bush’s escalation of the war in Iraq while vowing to “continue to support and protect the members of the United States Armed Forces.” The final roll call was 246 – 182 with 17 Republicans breaking ranks to vote in favor and only two Democrats registering opposition.

Council for a Livable World’s PeacePAC today released its annual national security scorecard. The voting record for the 109th Congress includes 12 votes from both 2005 and 2006. The issues used for the voting record included the Iraq war, U.N. funding, a ban on space-based weapons, missile defense, nuclear reprocessing, non-proliferation programs, Iran, and the U.S.-India nuclear deal.

The Council for a Livable World today praised Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) brave decision to move forward with Senate debate on President Bush’s escalation in Iraq despite weeks of obstructionist stalling by Senate Republicans. Debate is expected to take place Friday or Saturday.

Republicans have aired several deceptive television ads in at least four states attacking candidates endorsed by Council for a Livable World. Fighting fire with fire, the Council has created its own ad, calling out the Republicans for their attempt to distract voters before the November 7 elections.

Oct 11, 2006: Republicans Make Desperate Attempt To Blame Clinton Administration For Policy Failures On North Korea
The Council for a Livable World today described Republican efforts to lay the blame for the growing threat from North Korea’s nuclear weapon program on the Clinton Administration as a “desperate maneuver by a failed Administration.”
