May 14, 2008: Sen. Hart Meets with Council Supporters and Activists
On May 8, 2008, the Council for a Livable World and the American Constitution Society hosted a discussion in Connecticut with Council Chairman and former Senator Gary Hart, who spoke to an audience of one hundred people, including Council supporters, local community and business leaders and progressive activists. The focus of the discussion was on U.S. foreign policy and the agenda and challenges ahead for the next administration.

Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will soon introduce an amendment that would effectively end the war in Iraq. The Senate will vote on the amendment EITHER TODAY OR TOMORROW. Your support of the Feingold-Reid amendment is urgently needed!

May 11, 2007: Votes on Iraq Yesterday
Yesterday was an important day. A total of 171 House members voted for a prompt withdrawal from Iraq, a new high-water maker for strong anti-war sentiment.

Late last night, there was a surprise announcement that the House of Representatives will hold several important votes tonight. It is urgent that those of us who believe the U.S. should withdraw from Iraq call our Representatives THIS AFTERNOON and urge them to support legislation to end the war.

In a major rebuff to the President, the House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee last week cut the Bush Administration’s funding request for a new generation of nuclear weapons and for national missile defense. Both of these programs are unnecessary, expensive, and threaten the long-term security of the United States.

Exactly four years after standing in front of a banner emblazoned with the slogan “Mission Accomplished” and proudly declaring the end of major combat operations in Iraq, President Bush now stands poised to veto legislation that would bring U.S. troops home. Tens of thousands of lives and billions of dollars later, it is clear that Mission Accomplished has become Mission Impossible.

Apr 27, 2007: Enough is Enough
The House passed the bill 218-208 late on Wednesday night, with the Senate following suit 51-46 on Thursday afternoon. The legislation now goes to President Bush’s desk where he is expected to veto it. Instead of agreeing to a timeline to withdraw our troops from the worsening quagmire in Iraq, Bush continues to boast of progress and says that more time is needed. We have heard this broken record over and over.
