When Republicans Attack
Oct 4, 2006
Dear Friends,
Republicans have again reached for the gutter. You knew they would do it. In a desperate attempt to win the election, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) began running a deceptive TV ad attacking Iowa Democrat Bruce Braley for receiving support from Council for a Livable World. You can watch the ad on our website. (Realplayer video)
Contribute $35, $50, or more to the Council and help us respond to this Swift Boat style attack!
The ad is a typical GOP distortion.
It claims we recommend cutting $130 billion from the Pentagon’s budget. False.
What we do favor is cutting Cold War weapons and focusing on equipping our brave soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq with what they need: body armor, fully armored vehicles, Predator drones, the best communication equipment, and beefed-up Homeland Security – including protection of our food and water supplies, and chemical and nuclear plants. Click here for a list of security programs supported by Council for a Livable World.
The ad also claims that one of our leaders recommended negotiating with the Taliban. Again, a bogus claim.
Roger Fisher, an internationally recognized expert on conflict resolution who teaches at Harvard University in fact recommended combining carrots and sticks to persuade the government of Afghanistan to turn over Osama bin Laden, something the Bush administration has been unable to accomplish:
What we want is to influence high-level people in Afghanistan to make a decision [to hand over bin Laden]. Both a stick and a carrot can help. We are wisely warning of damaging military consequences if they fail to decide as we would wish and suggesting the possibility of humanitarian aid if they do.
It is straight out of the Karl Rove bag of dirty tricks. We need your help to respond.
Contribute $35, $50, or more to the Council and help us respond to this underhanded attack!
Council for a Livable World helps candidates respond to sleazy attacks like this. We help them raise money for response ads, and we supply them with the facts, figures and talking points they need to respond quickly and get out the truth.
The election is less than five weeks away, and attacks like these are only going to get worse. Republicans are desperate to hold onto their majority.
We can win in November, but we need your help to do it.
Sincerely,
John Isaacs, President and Guy Stevens, Chief Operating Officer
PS – Just as we prepare to send this e-mail, we have learned about another attack, this one against Rep. John Spratt in South Carolina. Click here to help us fight back!
