A Victory in Maryland

Dear Friend,

| Donna Edwards successfully unseats Rep. Albert Wynn in Maryland. |
Thank you for your continued support in this critical election season!
Last night, Donna Edwards won a stunning victory over Rep. Albert Wynn - a staunch supporter of Bush's Iraq policy - 60% to 35%, in Maryland's 4th Congressional District. This victory couldn't have happened without the generous support of donors like you.
Edwards is a longtime peace and social justice advocate who actively opposed the Iraq war and calls for a US withdrawal. Rep. Wynn has supported the Bush administration on a number of issues, especially the Iraq war, and only changed his position after Edwards nearly unseated him in the 2006 election.
Our community scored a major victory last night with Edwards' win. Her margin of victory is far wider than most observers had predicted, and she is expected to win the general election in November by a significant margin.
On the other hand, a second candidate we supported, Maryland Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, a Republican opponent of the Iraq war, was not so fortunate and went down to a 43% - 33% defeat at the hands of a pro-war challenger, Republican State Sen. Andy Harris. Council for a Livable World supported Gilchrest in this race because the district is strongly partisan and will very likely go to the Republican nominee. Harris will face Democratic state's attorney Frank Kratovil in the general election in November. This loss is all the more reason why we need to continue to work hard and increase our support of progressive candidates this election cycle.
On behalf of the Council and Donna Edwards' and Wayne Gilchrest's campaigns, thank you for your generous donations to help send strong voices for progressive change. to Congress.
Sincerely,
