Veteran Candidates Who Can Win on Nov. 7
Oct 17, 2006
Dear Friend,
I am proud of my more than 30 years of service in the United States Army. Now, as a civilian, I am proud of my association with Council for a Livable World.
Council works hard to promote practical, pragmatic and progressive solutions to the national security challenges our nation faces. They promote smart security policies, like spending money on the body armor and up-armored hum-vees our soldiers need in Iraq and Afghanistan, rather than on high-tech, Cold War weapons systems designed for fighting the Soviet Union.
In these trying times, we need men and women in Congress who will support smart security policies, and Council is working hard to get them elected. In this e-mail you can support four of these candidates. They have all served in the United States military, and their experience gives them special credibility on national security issues. We need their voices in the important debates this country needs to have on subjects such as how to extract ourselves from the quagmire in Iraq.

Patrick Murphy’s (Pennsylvania CD-08) story is remarkable. As a soldier in the U.S. Army, he served in Bosnia and fought in the current Iraq war - a war he opposed. He was awarded the Bronze Star and his unit earned the Presidential Unit Citation. His experiences in Iraq convinced him that the war was a mistake to begin with and is going badly now. He believes the time has come to bring our troops home. Click to donate | Click to learn more
Admiral Joe Sestak (Pennsylvania CD-07) is a 31-year Navy veteran who retired in January. During the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, he commanded an aircraft carrier battle group of 30 ships and 15,000 sailors. From his position in the Persian Gulf, he could tell the Saddam Hussein was not an imminent threat and that the war in Iraq was misguided. He is running against Rep. Curt Weldon, who not only supported the war, but still believes that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Weldon is also the subject of an FBI investigation into political corruption. Eric Massa (New York CD-29) is a career naval officer who served as a top aide to Gen. Wesley Clarke during the NATO peacekeeping operation in Bosnia. Based on his experience rebuilding that shattered nation, he argues that the Bush administration has badly mishandled the war in Iraq: He says, “The reason we cannot find success in Iraq is dictated by the simple fact that we should not have engaged in this war in the first place. We are now trying to execute a fundamentally flawed strategy that will not succeed.” Click to donate | Click to learn more
Charlie Brown (California CD-04) was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, where he was a pilot and worked in intelligence. He coordinated surveillance flights over Iraq in the 1990s, which led him to believe that Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction. He is running against Rep. John Doolittle (R), an eight term incumbent. Doolittle has extensive ties with lobbyist Jack Abramoff and former Rep. Duke Cunningham, who have both pleaded guilty to charges of corruption. These four soldiers want to continue their service to their country in the halls of Congress. They will support sensible national security policies and oppose the misguided policies of George W. Bush. I urge you to support them.
