URGENT: Oppose the New Iraq Supplemental!

May 24, 2007

Dear Friend,

Eager to send the President a spending bill on Iraq before the Memorial Day recess, Congressional Democrats dropped their insistence yesterday that the bill include a date for withdrawing American combat troops from Iraq.

The House is scheduled to vote on Thursday on an amendment to the Supplemental Appropriations bill (HR 2206) that would instead only include benchmarks that the Iraqi government must meet in order to continue receiving non-military aid. President Bush could, however, waive the aid cutoff.

Many Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), are expected to vote against the amendment.

We support timetables and tough benchmarks for the Bush Administration. We feel that previous amendments and bills have made significant progress to express the mandate of the American public in the 2006 elections to end the war. This latest version of the Supplemental bill puts the brakes on that progress.

We cannot support a bill that provides nearly $100 billion to continue fighting the war in Iraq without accompanying provisions to move toward an end to the war.

Please contact your Representative on Thursday and urge him or her to vote “no” on the Supplemental Appropriations bill. Click here to look up the phone numbers to your Representative's office.

Sincerely,

John Isaacs and Guy Stevens

P.S. Please remember to forward this on to five friends and ask them to contact their Representatives too!
