Stop The War Fund
Apr 6, 2007
Dear Friend,
Council for a Livable World is the most effective advocacy organization and national political action committee that focuses on Iraq, nuclear weapons and other national security issues.

The Council has been working hard in Washington, D.C. with Senate leaders to bring an end to the tragic and misguided war in Iraq. When the House and Senate voted in the past two weeks to set a deadline for withdrawal of American military forces from Iraq, Council for a Livable World was a critical ally in that fight.
Now we are working to change the minds of Senators and House members who continue to support the Iraq war. If enough Republicans turn against the war, we can build a two-thirds majority to overcome a presidential veto of binding anti-war legislation.
During recent votes in Congress, a number of vulnerable incumbents refused to vote for legislation to end the war.
Maine Senator Susan Collins opposed Sen. Harry Reid’s (D-NV) binding legislation to end the war.
New Hampshire Senator John Sununu refuses to break with the President on the war.
Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman has been a war supporter from the beginning.
New Mexico Representative Heather Wilson voted against recent anti-war legislation.
All these Members have to stand for e-election in 2008. All of them to this point have defied public opinion in their state and nationally. They must be convinced to oppose the Iraq war.
Since 1962, a key focus for Council for a Livable World has been helping elect candidates who endorse expanded nuclear non-proliferation programs and support national security policies that stress diplomatic solutions to global problems. In the last election, Council for a Livable World’s Candidate Fund raised over $1.5 million and helped elect 17 Senators and 25 Representatives – candidates such Jon Tester of Montana, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Ben Cardin of Maryland. All back Sen. Reid’s legislation to end the disastrous Iraq War.
By assisting these new Members of Congress, the Council played an important role in building towards narrow majorities for an end to the war. Now we have to work on expanding that support.
Sincerely,

Gary Hart, Chairman
