Though Al Franken from Minnesota is an award-winning satirist, comedian, entertainer and author, he is also a serious candidate to take a Senate seat away from a George W. Bush clone.

This election is for the seat of Paul Wellstone, whose life was tragically cut short by an airplane accident shortly before the 2002 election.

The Republican incumbent, Norman Coleman, won that somber election, and has compiled a record that is the exact opposite of Paul Wellstone's. Coleman supports the Iraq War, nuclear bunker buster bombs, and has led a fight to cut funding for the United Nations.

Al Franken is in the progressive tradition of Minnesota Democratic leaders.

He advocates setting a date to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq, opposes new nuclear weapons, and supports a nuclear test ban treaty.

Franken has competition from other worthy candidates for the Democratic nomination. But Council for a Livable World judges Franken to be the strongest general election challenger to Coleman.

The Minnesota nominating process begins with precinct caucuses to be held on February 5.

Public opinion polls show Franken gaining steadily on Senator Coleman.

Let us all help Al Franken get to the Senate.
