Santorum's Last Stand
Oct 1, 2006
Dear Friends,
In Pennsylvania, there is an excellent opportunity to not only unseat a far right Senator in Rick Santorum, but also to replace him with an advocate of sensible national security policies in Bob Casey.
A staunch ally of the Bush Administration and a leader of the religious right in the Senate, Santorum has voted with President Bush an overwhelming 98% of the time. Not coincidentally, he is the most vulnerable U.S. Senate incumbent in the country. Change is desperately needed in the Senate and Bob Casey can provide that change.

Santorum is an all-out hawk on national security issues. He supports the war in Iraq, voted many times in favor of both the nuclear bunker buster and national missile defense, opposed attempts to lessen restrictions on nonproliferation funding, and supported John Bolton to be Ambassador to the United Nations.
Santorum even goes beyond the Bush White House in his support for the Iraq war. In arguing that the Bush Administration was correct in going to war, Santorum recently claimed that the discovery of 500 munitions containing "degraded" mustard or sarin gas (manufactured before 1991) constituted proof of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction. Even the White House wouldn’t back this claim.
Casey would be a big improvement over Santorum. He opposes building nuclear bunker buster weapons and would halt deployment of national missile defense until further research proves the system will work. Casey believes that the United States needs "to move forward quickly to turn the fighting over to Iraqi Security Forces and bring our troops home."

Casey has consistently led Santorum in the public opinion polls, but Santorum has millions of dollars in his campaign chest. At the end of the last reporting period, Santorum had just over $9 million cash on hand, while Casey had $5 million cash on hand. Santorum has enlisted high-ranking Republicans to assist with campaign fundraising, including Rudy Giuliani, President Bush (who helped bring in $700,000), and Karl Rove.
This election in Pennsylvania is a rare opportunity to replace an extreme hawk and dedicated right-winger with a popular and effective advocate of sensible national security policies.

Sincerely,
