Republicans Prevent Iraq Vote

Jul 19, 2007

Dear Friend,

John Isaacs on Levin-Reed amendment
Click here to watch John Isaacs explain the procedural maneuvers the Republicans used to block a vote on the Levin-Reed amendment.

Senate Republicans continued their recalcitrant ways yesterday, refusing to allow a vote on the Levin-Reed amendment to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq. The amendment to the Defense Authorization bill would have required that the U.S. begin troop withdrawal within the next 120 days and have most troops out of Iraq by next spring.

We would like to thank all of you who contacted your Senators and helped us publish a powerful ad in Politico pressuring Congress to withdraw our troops from Iraq. While we did not succeed, we are building pressure for an end to the war.

The Levin-Reed amendment brought together a majority of the Senate in favor of binding legislation to end the war, including two new Republicans: Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, both of Maine. Snowe and Collins were joined by Republican Sens. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Gordon Smith of Oregon. The vote was 52 – 47.

Council for a Livable World will continue to fight for a prompt and orderly withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. There will be many other opportunities for Congress to end the war in the near future and your continued support will be essential.

Thank you again for your help.

Sincerely,

John Isaacs and Guy Stevens
