Outrageous! Bush Plans 50 Year Occupation

Jun 7, 2007

Dear Friend,

The Bush administration would like a little more time to wage war in Iraq – another 50 years.

White House press secretary Tony Snow pointed last week to the U.S. presence in Korea – where thousands of American soldiers have been stationed since the 1950s – as a model for U.S. policy in Iraq. Defense Secretary Robert Gates agreed the next day.

Our response should be not just no, but Hell No! It would be better to withdraw U.S. troops in 50 days than to leave them in Iraq for 50 years!

Click here to contribute $50, $75, or more to support Council for a Livable World’s efforts to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq.

As Council for a Livable World Chairman, Senator Gary Hart, recently mentioned to the Denver Post, the comparison between Iraq and Korea is ridiculous: in Iraq, there's no border, no truce and no opposition government with which to negotiate.

The closer parallel is to Vietnam, where the U.S was forced to leave hanging from helicopters.

Council for a Livable World is distributing a newspaper ad calling for lawmakers to begin an honorable withdrawal from Iraq. (You can see a full size version of the ad here).

Please help us spread this message further by making a contribution of $50, $75, or more to help us place this ad in newspapers throughout the country.

Senator Hart points out, "The people who planned [the Iraq war] all along had in mind that this would be our military and political base in the region. The fact that anyone in the administration still clings to that hope is delusional."

The Iraq War has been an unmitigated disaster. The Bush administration’s plan to permanently occupy Iraq will only compound this disaster for generations to come.

Enough is enough. It is time to end the war and bring our troops home.

Please contribute $50, $75, or more to help us place this ad in as many newspapers as possible.

Sincerely,

John Isaacs and Guy Stevens
