Oppose Bush's Escalation in Iraq!

Jan 5, 2007

Dear Friend,

The incompetents who brought us the disastrous Iraq war are at it again.

While promising a new strategy for Iraq, President Bush and his neo-conservative advisors are expected to make a bad situation worse by pouring more troops into Iraq.

The war has already resulted in the deaths of more than 3,000 Americans, the wounding of an additional 22,000 soldiers, and taken the lives of tens of thousands of Iraqis. The U.S. position in the Middle East and around the world has sunk to an all-time low.

Rather than support a troop increase, it is time to admit a tragic mistake and bring American soldiers home.

There is no time to waste. Please sign this petition to your Members of Congress today asking them to vigorously oppose any military escalation in Iraq.

President Bush is expected next week to announce an increase in American troops in Iraq by approximately 17,000 to 20,000.

In the November elections, the American people made a clear statement that we need a change of course in Iraq. A major escalation of U.S. troops is not the new course we need.

The Administration will argue that a “temporary” increase of tens of thousands of troops will make a difference. That is like a poker player doubling down on a losing hand – except with terrible human suffering the result.

We have spent nearly $400 billion on the war in Iraq and will spend half a trillion dollars by the end of 2009 even if all U.S. troops were withdrawn. Deadly attacks against American and Iraqi security forces continue on a daily basis and the occupation by American troops provides insurgents with a constant stream of new recruits. More troops are not the answer.

Please sign this petition to your Members of Congress today asking them to vigorously oppose any military escalation in Iraq.

Opposition to this terrible idea is bi-partisan.

Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Norm Coleman of Minnesota, having both returned from a trip to Iraq, recently expressed their opposition to the plan, and were quickly joined by Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana, and Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska. A great number more have taken a “wait and see” approach to Bush’s plan.

We need both Republicans and Democrats to speak up vigorously.

Please sign this petition to your Members of Congress today asking them to vigorously oppose any military escalation in Iraq.

We will send copies of the petition to Members of Congress by Wednesday, the day when the President is expected to propose the increase.

Sincerely,

John Isaacs and Guy Stevens

P.S. Help spread the word! Forward this email on to five friends. This is a most urgent matter. Many lives hang in the balance!
