Dear Friend,

| Chairman of Council for a Livable World, Senator Gary Hart, speaks about what security really means. |
Council for a Livable World is unveiling a new series of short policy interviews to engage the public in discussions on the future of national security.
We’ve started this new initiative by having Senator Gary Hart, Chairman of Council for a Livable World, discuss what security really means; Lt. Gen. Robert Gard, Senior Military Fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, talk about the parallels between the Iraq War and the Vietnam War; and Brig. Gen. John Johns, Board Member of Council for a Livable World, describe a new national security strategy for the United States.
Senator Gary Hart, Chairman of Council for a Livable World, on what security really means: “…security is going to mean a lot more things and bigger things than it did even 15 years ago. It must include not only the security of our borders, clearly, and prevention of future terrorist attacks, it must mean the security of the environment… It must include energy security… It must include the security of livelihood… And, I think, finally, it must include also a sense that all Americans can have at least basic healthcare.”Click here to watch the video (5:58min).
Lt. Gen. Robert Gard (USA, ret.), Senior Military Fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, on the parallels between the Iraq War and the Vietnam War: “A hauntingly similar situation is the current effort in Iraq compared with what occurred in Vietnam is March of 1968. At that time, both the Secretary of Defense and the President knew that the war was not winnable militarily, just as our current military commanders, and even the President, know that we cannot win the conflict in Iraq militarily.”Click here to watch the video (6:24min).
Brig. Gen. John Johns (USA, ret.), Board Member of Council for a Livable World, on a new national security strategy: “ …It must be a multilateral approach, something that characterized our governments up until the time – basically Ronald Reagan got a little away from it but this President has pretty much thumbed his nose at multilateral approaches. It must involve the rest of the world.”Click here to watch the video (6:33min).
We’re interested in what you think of our initial efforts. Tell us what you like, or what we could do better. Also, let us know what other topics you would be interested in us discussing.
Sincerely,
