Join the Opposition to Escalation in Iraq!
Jan 8, 2007
Dear Friend,
Over the past 72 hours, our petition to tell Congress to vigorously oppose military escalation in Iraq has received over 5,000 signatures! Thank you for your support!
In order to show Congress that the public firmly opposes pouring more troops into Iraq, we want to triple the number of signatures by Wednesday, when President Bush is expected to announce the escalation.
Please sign the petition now if you haven’t already. If you have already signed the petition, please send it to five friends and ask them to sign it, too.
Bi-partisan opposition to Bush’s plan to increase American troops in Iraq by approximately 20,000 is strengthening.
On Friday, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to President Bush, urging him to reject this plan which would delay the ability of the Iraqi people to take control of their own future.
“We want to do everything we can to help Iraq succeed in the future but, like many of our senior military leaders, we do not believe that adding more U.S. combat troops contributes to success. They, like us, believe there is no purely military solution in Iraq. There is only a political solution."
Reid and Pelosi join a chorus of other Democrats, including Senator Joseph Biden, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who called escalation the “absolute wrong strategy.”
Please sign the petition now if you haven’t already. If you have already signed it, please help spread the word.
Over 12 out of 49 Republican Senators have also expressed opposition or skepticism towards President Bush’s troop increase and that number is increasing.
Last week, Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Norm Coleman of Minnesota, having returned from a trip to Iraq, expressed their opposition to the plan, and were quickly joined by Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana, and Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.
Hagel, the second-ranking Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, described escalation as ''Alice in Wonderland,'' stating ''I'm absolutely opposed to sending any more troops to Iraq. It is folly.''
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has said that the U.S. Army "is about broken" and that could he could not support sending significant numbers of troops to Iraq.
Please sign the petition now if you haven’t already. If you have already signed it, please send this email on to five friends.
We will send copies of the petition to Members of Congress by Wednesday, the day when the President is expected to propose the escalation. It is vital that as many people as possible add their names before then.
Sincerely,
