Investigate Fraud In Iraq

Dec 4, 2006

Dear Friend,

There has been massive waste, fraud and abuse Iraq by Halliburton and other contractors who have made huge profits while Americans and Iraqis are dying in a hopeless occupation.

But there is one last opportunity to hold President Bush accountable before Congress finishes for the year.

Iraq Reconstruction

Please ask your Senators and Representatives to resurrect the office on Inspector General for Iraq reconstruction. You can call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Ask for your state’s Senator or your district’s Representative.

Public awareness of the abuses committed before and during the war helps build the case for bringing troops home. And with a new Congress taking office in 2007, we will have additional opportunities to insist that President Bush make this happen.

It may be possible to form a majority in Congress to demand the withdrawal of troops now that Democrats control Congress and many Republicans backed away from their support of the war while facing tough re-election battles.

But before that happens, we should pressure Congress to reverse a sneaky Republican move to terminate what little oversight there has been to date.

There must be aggressive oversight of the lies that the Bush Administration used to convince Congress and the public to support the war in 2002.

Please ask your Senators and Representatives to resurrect the office on Inspector General for Iraq reconstruction. You can call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Ask for your state’s Senator or your district’s Representative.

The United States has had troops in Iraq longer than we were in all of World War II.

Unbelievably as it sounds, the United States and its allies were able to defeat Nazi Germany, Italy’s Mussolini and the Japanese empire in less time that we have been bogged down in the Iraqi quagmire.

Yet the killing goes on, with a full-fledged civil war killing many Iraqi civilians and increasing American casualties as well.

In mid-November, Senate Republicans, embarrassed by the underhanded actions of the House Armed Services Committee, twice passed legislation to ensure the continuation of the Inspector General for Iraq reconstruction.

Now we have to ensure that the provision – passed as part of both the Military Construction Appropriations Bill and as a stand-alone measure – survives a House-Senate conference.

Please ask your Senators and Representatives to resurrect the office on Inspector General for Iraq reconstruction. You can call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Ask for your state’s Senator or your district’s Representative. Pressure them to keep their word and hold President Bush accountable.

Sincerely,

John Isaacs and Guy Stevens

P.S. This is the first opportunity in the new environment after the elections to build pressure to exit from Iraq. Please send this e-mail to five of your friends.
