Jan 25, 2007: Good News & Bad News on Escalation in Iraq
The good news is that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has passed the Biden-Hagel-Levin-Snowe resolution that condemns President Bush’s plan to send more than 20,000 more troops to Iraq. The bad news is that Sen. Hagel (R-NE) was the only Republican senator to vote in favor of the final version of the resolution.
Jan 24, 2007: What's your State of the Union address?
In his State of the Union address last night, President Bush defended his decision to escalate the war in Iraq by linking the fight there to the broader war on terrorism. The terrible reality is that the war in Iraq has done more to create terrorism than it has to prevent it. Sending over 20,000 more troops into harm’s way will do little to solve the underlying political problems that plague Iraq and will only lead to more U.S. and Iraqi casualties.
Jan 18, 2007: Republican rejection of Iraq war
Congressional opposition to President Bush’s plan to escalate the war by sending over 20,000 more troops to Iraq is growing in both parties. Two key Republican Senators joined Democrats yesterday in co-sponsoring a measure criticizing the escalation and more could soon join them.
Jan 16, 2007: Congress Is Listening; Prevent Escalation In Iraq
The pressure we have been putting on Congress to oppose President Bush’s plan to escalate the war in Iraq is working. Senator Kennedy's office personally contacted us to thank us and our supporters for our help. We must help Senator Kennedy lead this fight by increasing the pressure on other Senators.
Jan 11, 2007: Tell Congress to oppose Bush's Iraq escalation!
"The situation in Iraq is unacceptable to the American people, and it is unacceptable to me," said President Bush last night as he announced his new plan for Iraq. Yet, in direct opposition to his generals, the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, and the American people, Bush has decided to up the ante once more and send over 20,000 more troops to Iraq. This decision is sure to escalate a conflict already spiraling dangerously out of control and make a bad situation even worse.
Jan 10, 2007: Experts Criticize Iraq Escalation
President Bush’s abuses of power have not only had disastrous domestic implications, but have also led to tragic consequences in Iraq as well. His proposal to escalate the war in Iraq is only the most recent in a series of grave errors.
Jan 9, 2007: Momentum Building Against Iraq Escalation!
Great news! Since our email yesterday, over 10,000 more people signed the petition to tell Congress to vigorously oppose military escalation in Iraq! Thank you for helping us shatter our goal! Now it’s time to raise the bar a little higher. Our new goal is to collect 25,000 signatures by tomorrow night, when President Bush is expected to announce his plan to increase troop numbers in Iraq.
Jan 8, 2007: Join the Opposition to Escalation in Iraq!
Over the past 72 hours, our petition to tell Congress to vigorously oppose military escalation in Iraq has received over 5,000 signatures! Thank you for your support! In order to show Congress that the public firmly opposes pouring more troops into Iraq, we want to triple the number of signatures by Wednesday, when President Bush is expected to announce the escalation.
Jan 5, 2007: Oppose Bush's Escalation in Iraq!
The incompetents who brought us the disastrous Iraq war are at it again. While promising a new strategy for Iraq, President Bush and his neo-conservative advisors are expected to make a bad situation worse by pouring more troops into Iraq.
Jan 4, 2007: 2007 Calendar
Council for a Livable World would like to thank you for all of your support this past year by helping you remember key Congressional, political, and cultural events in the upcoming year! Below you'll find a 2007 calendar that we hope you find helpful.
Dec 11, 2006: Final legislative victories
Two early holiday presents arrived last week, with the announcement that U.N. Ambassador John Bolton is out when his recess appointment expires at the end of the year, and with the restoration of the inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, an investigative office that will look into waste, fraud, and abuse. Unfortunately, with those presents also came a lump of coal: Congress approved the U.S.-India nuclear deal last week, which threatens to seriously weaken non-proliferation efforts and norms.
Dec 8, 2006: Hart, Galbraith, and Grossman comment on the ISG report
“Among the many inevitable outcomes of the unnecessary invasion of Iraq was the appointment of a commission of worthies assigned to work out how we get the hornets back in the nest we had kicked open,” writes former Senator Gary Hart, now Chairman of Council for a Livable World.
Dec 6, 2006: Iraq Study Group report
The independent and bipartisan Iraq Study Group (ISG) released its report on Iraq today. Among its major recommendations are that the United States should redeploy its combat troops from Iraq with no fixed timeline for total withdrawal; engage regional actors, including Iran and Syria; and embed more American military personnel with Iraqi Army units to assist in their training. Council for a Livable World believes that the ISG’s recommendations are a great start but that more needs to be done.
Dec 4, 2006: Investigate Fraud In Iraq
There has been massive waste, fraud and abuse Iraq by Halliburton and other contractors who have made huge profits while Americans and Iraqis are dying in a hopeless occupation. But there is one last opportunity to hold President Bush accountable before Congress finishes for the year.
Nov 21, 2006: 2006 Election Contest Results
Council for a Livable World announced that the reigning political genius for the next two years, the winner of its 2006 election contest, is Lowell Ungar of Washington, D.C.
Nov 8, 2006: Landslide victory!
The 2006 election has changed the direction of our country. Democrats have taken control of the House of Representatives and control of the Senate sits on the razors’ edge, too close to call as we write. The voters rejected the failed policies of George W. Bush in Iraq and elected thoughtful and dedicated advocates of responsible national security policies. These excellent additions to the Senate significantly increase the number of Senators and Representatives prepared to work for a world free of weapons of mass destruction.
Nov 6, 2006: Down to the wire
This is it. Tomorrow, voters will go to the polls across the country and cast their votes in an election that is now seen as a referendum on President George W. Bush and the war in Iraq.
Nov 3, 2006: Final Push to Win the House
This is it! With only four days left until Election Day, Democrats are poised to take back control of the House of Representatives for the first time since 1994. Republicans have their backs against the wall and are desperate to avoid defeat next Tuesday. There is little they won’t stoop to in order to cling to power. The last few weeks have seen attack ads, character assassination and outright lies. Many political experts are saying this is the dirtiest campaign they have ever seen.
Nov 2, 2006: Five days and counting...
The tide is with us. The Bush Administration knows that Democrats are on the verge of taking the House and perhaps even the Senate. Victories are likely in Pennsylvania and Ohio, but there are still close contests to hold on to Senator Menendez’s seat in New Jersey and to unseat Senator Burns in Montana.
Oct 31, 2006: Trick or Treat!
It’s Halloween, and tonight, children across the country will be putting on their scariest costumes, while Republicans across the country have found that the Iraq war is their scariest nightmare. They have tried to turn the tables by running TV ads connecting Democratic candidates with Osama bin Laden and they have even been attacking Council for a Livable World.
