Apr 6, 2007: Stop The War Fund
The Council has been working hard in Washington, D.C. with Senate leaders to bring an end to the tragic and misguided war in Iraq. When the House and Senate voted in the past two weeks to set a deadline for withdrawal of American military forces from Iraq, Council for a Livable World was a critical ally in that fight. Now we are working to change the minds of Senators and House members who continue to support the Iraq war. If enough Republicans turn against the war, we can build a two-thirds majority to overcome a presidential veto of binding anti-war legislation.

Apr 2, 2007: Tell President Bush: Dont Veto Iraq Bill
In the last two weeks, both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed legislation calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Proving once again that he has no regard for the clear will of Congress and the American people, President Bush immediately announced that he would veto this legislation. Please tell the President to agree to a timeline for withdrawal of American combat forces from Iraq by signing the legislation sent to him by Congress.

Mar 30, 2007: Iraq: Reason for hope
In an historic vote, the Senate has joined the House of Representatives to endorse binding legislation to begin withdrawing American troops from Iraq.

Mar 23, 2007: Big first step on Iraq
The House of Representatives today adopted language mandating the redeployment of most American troops from Iraq by August 2008. In a razor-thin margin, the bill passed 218 to 212.

Mar 22, 2007: URGENT! Vote on the House Supplemental TOMORROW
Listen to Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA) explain why he is voting in favor of the Supplemental Appropriations bill that sets a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq: "I think because of the overwhelming support that is coming out from across the political spectrum ... including [liberal] groups like MoveOn and Council for a Livable World, and other groups that are moderate, conservative who want to get something done to provide the troops the funding they need, and at the same time establish clear timelines to end this war in Iraq."

Mar 20, 2007: Tell Congress: vote "Yes" on ending the Iraq war
Good news came last week when the House Appropriations Committee voted 36-28 to endorse a Democratic proposal to require the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops by September 1, 2008, and sooner still if tangible advances towards peace and Iraqi responsibility are not achieved. The proposal was attached to the $124 billion Supplemental Appropriations bill, which now moves to the full House and will be voted on this Thursday. It is crucial that this bill pass. The defeat of the Supplemental Appropriations bill would give Bush and Cheney a free hand to wage war as they see fit.

Mar 14, 2007: Contact the House: No war with Iran
In order to hinder a new Bush war, the House leadership initially agreed to a provision in the draft Supplemental Appropriations bill for the Iraq war (the same bill that contains language mandating an exit from Iraq) that would require the president to seek congressional authorization before launching a military attack against Iran. But on Monday, under pressure from House members of both parties, the House leadership deleted the no war with Iran provision from the supplemental funding bill.

Mar 13, 2007: Support Iraq troop withdrawal in Senate
"When members [of Congress] speak not of victory but of time limits, deadlines and other arbitrary measures, they are telling the enemy simply to watch the clock and wait us out," said Vice President Dick Cheney yesterday in a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Cheney was objecting to Democratic efforts to force the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Mar 9, 2007: Prod Senate to withdraw troops
"There is no military solution to a problem like that in Iraq, to the insurgency of Iraq. Military action is necessary to help improve security ... but it is not sufficient." That was the message yesterday of General David Petraeus, commander of U.S. military forces in Iraq.

Mar 7, 2007: Drumbeat of Iran war
"We are not planning for a war with Iran,”announced Defense Secretary Robert Gates last month, echoing the repeated denials of numerous Bush Administration officials. Yet evidence is increasingly pointing in the opposite direction.

Mar 5, 2007: New Effort to Build New Nukes
Last week, the Department of Energy announced that it has selected a design for developing the nation’s first new nuclear bomb in two decades. It is both hypocritical and counter-productive for the United States to build new nuclear weapons at the same time that it is trying to convince countries such as Iran and North Korea not to develop their own nuclear weapons.

Feb 23, 2007: Slowly but surely we're winning
Even before President Bush officially announced his plan to send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq on January 10, Council for a Livable World was at the vanguard opposing this dangerous and misguided decision. With your help, we collected well over 40,000 signatures on our petitions telling Congress to oppose troop escalation in Iraq. Thousands more contacted their Senators and Representatives.

Feb 16, 2007: Victory for de-escalation in Iraq!
Good news! The House of Representatives voted 246-182 today in favor of the Skelton-Lantos resolution (H Con Res 63) condemning President Bush’s escalation of the war in Iraq! Thank you to all of you whose calls made this success possible! Now on to the Senate! The Senate will be holding a special Saturday session tomorrow to debate the House resolution. Republicans used procedural maneuvers to block a debate last week, and they are expected to try to filibuster again tomorrow.

Feb 15, 2007: Last push to support Skelton-Lantos!
Today is the last of three intense days of debate on the Skelton-Lantos resolution condemning President Bush’s escalation of the war in Iraq. Twelve Republicans have openly criticized the escalation, but as many as sixty could vote with the Democratic majority after the debate ends tonight. Your support is needed to push undecided Representatives, especially Republicans, to vote in favor of the Skelton-Lantos resolution.

Feb 12, 2007: Tell your Rep. to support Skelton-Lantos!
As we told you last Friday, the House of Representatives is set to vote at the end of this week on a resolution introduced by Missouri Representative Ike Skelton and California Representative Tom Lantos criticizing President Bush’s escalation of the war in Iraq. Please tell your Representatives to support the Skelton-Lantos resolution (H Con Res 63) opposing sending more troops to Iraq. You can call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard toll-free at 866-340-9281 and they will connect you to your Representative.

Feb 9, 2007: House to vote on Iraq next week
The House is likely to vote next week on a resolution introduced by Missouri Representative Ike Skelton and California Representative Tom Lantos criticizing President Bush’s escalation of the war in Iraq. An overwhelming bi-partisan vote for the Skelton-Lantos resolution will be an important step in the process of extricating the U.S. from Iraq.

Feb 5, 2007: Senate Vote on Iraq this Week
The Senate is likely to vote this week on a resolution introduced by Virginia Senator John Warner criticizing President Bush’s escalation of the war in Iraq. An overwhelming bi-partisan vote for the Warner resolution this week will be an important step in the process of extricating the U.S. from Iraq. Passage of the resolution would provide political momentum for later, tougher bills providing binding language that brings an end to the war.

Feb 2, 2007: Stop Another War
Over the past year, we have seen ominous signs that President Bush is preparing a military attack on Iran. Over the past few weeks, his rhetoric about Iran has become even more bellicose. An attack on Iran would be an unmitigated disaster. We need your help to build public resistance to a war with Iran.

Jan 31, 2007: Remembering Father Drinan
It is with a heavy heart that we tell you about the passing of Father Robert F. Drinan, chairman of PeacePAC, an affiliate of Council for a Livable World. Father Drinan was a tireless advocate of human rights and social justice throughout the world.

Jan 29, 2007: Iraq Call In Day TODAY
“Hogwash.” That’s the word Vice President Cheney used last week to dismiss suggestions that the Bush Administration’s blunders and failures have hurt its credibility on Iraq. He even went on to boast, “Bottom line is that we've had enormous successes, and we will continue to have enormous successes.” Cheney’s statements come in response to increased criticism of the Bush Administration’s recent plan to escalate the war in Iraq by increasing the amount of troops there by over 21,000.
