The elections in November provide the opportunity to dramatically change the direction of U.S. foreign policy and begin to repair the damage wrought by the eight years of the George W. Bush presidency.

The election of a new president committed to multi-lateral approaches to solving global problems is crucial. However, it is equally important to elect a Congress that will support the new President as he or she works to correct the course of a ship of state that has gone seriously awry.

President Bush's allies have shown over the last year how a determined minority in the House and Senate can take advantage of the complex congressional process and use procedural votes to block important legislation. We need an even larger majority in Congress in 2009 to end the war in Iraq, stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and address other international challenges.

Council for a Livable World specializes in identifying candidates for the House and Senate who are strong supporters of sensible foreign policies and international cooperation. The Council's staff monitors hundreds of elections across country looking for candidates who meet two criteria: they are committed to peaceful solutions to international conflict, and they can win.

Throughout the year we will bring these candidates to your attention with information about who they are, what they believe in and the political odds in their election. We urge you to support them.

In the meantime, visit our website to find up-to-date analysis on these important (and close!) races in the Senate and the House of Representatives. You can contribute to candidates we've already endorsed. We also have some great information on this year's presidential race, though we don't endorse any presidential candidates.

Also, check out our YouTube Channel where you'll find videos of the candidates discussing vital issues.

Together, we can help elect candidates that will put our country back on track.

Sincerely,

John Isaacs and Guy Stevens
