Voters are fed up with the direction of our country. They're tired of empty rhetoric and failed solutions. In large and small ways, they are demanding change and are ready to hold the President and the Congress accountable.

In a year, we could see the electoral shift that began with the dramatic 2006 elections continue even further. Tectonic political realignments such as this only come around once in a generation.

There is a U.S. Senate candidate from Oregon who embodies the kind of thoughtful but tough approach we expect from our leaders.

Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D) is running to replace Senator Gordon Smith (R), and he deserves our support.

Until late last year, Gordon Smith was one of the president's top cheerleaders for the Iraq war. He voted for war in 2002 and has continually supported it. He even questioned the patriotism of Americans who had the nerve to speak out against it.

When the public began turning against the war, Sen. Smith claimed a change of heart. But Smith's votes haven't matched his rhetoric.

Jeff Merkley is a different kind of candidate. Please consider a donation to his campaign of $25, $50 or whatever you can afford.

Jeff is a rare candidate who is an expert in nuclear weapons and national security issues. He spent many years working on nuclear issues. For the last decade he served as President and later Board Member of the World Affairs Council of Oregon. He plans to be a champion on these issues in the Senate.

Jeff opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2002 and continues to oppose it today.
