Enough is Enough
Apr 27, 2007
Dear Friend,
"How many more suicide bombs must kill American soldiers before this president offers a timeline for our troops to come home?" asked Rep. Patrick J. Murphy (D-PA) and Iraq war veteran during Wednesday’s debate on a $124 billion spending bill that orders President Bush to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq by October 1 and sets a goal of having most combat forces out of Iraq within six months after that.
"How many more military leaders must declare the war will not be won militarily before this president demands that the Iraqis stand up and fight for their country? How many more terrorists will President Bush's foreign policy breed before he focuses a new strategy, a real strategy? This bill says enough is enough."
The House passed the bill 218-208 late on Wednesday night, with the Senate following suit 51-46 on Thursday afternoon. The legislation now goes to President Bush’s desk where he is expected to veto it.
Instead of agreeing to a timeline to withdraw our troops from the worsening quagmire in Iraq, Bush continues to boast of progress and says that more time is needed. We have heard this broken record over and over.
Editorial cartoonist Mark Fiore makes this point humorously and clearly in his cartoon, “Recap.” Click here to watch the cartoon.
While President Bush continues to say that peace and stability are just around the corner, Council for a Livable World is diligently working to end the disastrous Iraq war. Please contribute $35, $50, or more to help us fight to bring the war to an end.
When President Bush announced his plan to send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq, Council for a Livable World was at the vanguard opposing this dangerous and misguided decision. With your help, we collected well over 40,000 signatures on our petitions telling Congress to oppose troop escalation in Iraq.
When evidence of massive waste, fraud, and abuse Iraq by Halliburton and other contractors was uncovered, Council for a Livable World successfully pressed Congress resurrect the office on Inspector General for Iraq reconstruction.
With your assistance, we raised $1.5 million and helped elect many new Members of Congress who are now actively pushing for U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq.
Sincerely,
