Bush commits to endless Iraq war

Those of us who think we'll wake up from America's foreign policy nightmare in January 2009 may need to think again. Last week, President Bush signed an agreement with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that commits the U.S. to a "long term" relationship with Iraq.
This document is the first step toward a binding agreement Bush plans to sign next year that will commit his successor to a permanent relationship with Iraq.
The "Declaration of Principles for Friendship and Cooperation" includes plans on how the U.S. will continue to intervene in Iraqi security, economic, and political affairs.
According to Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, the chief White House Iraq official, this pact will not be submitted to Congress for approval, but it will be submitted to the Iraqi Parliament. This administration is eager to spout rhetoric and wage wars in the name of "building democracy" abroad, but skips its own democratic practices at home.
Congress still might consider the Supplemental Appropriations Bill - to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan - before the end of the year. Any supplemental must include language barring the President from committing us to a permanent relationship with Iraq.
Bush will have had his eight disastrous years in office. January 20, 2009 is a new President's chance - our chance - to turn that around. Don't let Bush screw it up.
Sincerely,
