Election Roundup

Sep 13, 2006

Yesterday was a big day for several Senate and House races.

In key Senate races, Rep. Ben Cardin (D) secured a spot against Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R) in Maryland; Senator Hillary Clinton (D) handily defeated anti-war challenger Jonathan Tasini (D) in New York; and moderate Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee survived a strong challenge from the right in Rhode Island.

In key House races, Conservative Randy Graf beat the party-backed moderate Steve Huffman in Arizona's 8th district; anti-war candidate Carol Shea-Porter upset the establishment supported Jim Craig to challenge Rep. Jeb Bradley (R) in New Hampshire's 1st district; and Keith Ellison won the Democratic nomination in Minnesota's 5th district -- Ellison is strongly favored to win in November and become America's first Muslim Congressman.

But even more important races lie ahead. That is why it is important to donate to Council for a Livable World so that we can continue to support candidates who advocate sensible national security policies.

With your help, we've raised nearly $500,000 for Senate candidates and nearly $300,000 for House candidates for the current Congressional cycle. But more help is needed.

There are only 55 days left until general elections on November 12, so every day and every dollar counts! Donate to the Council for a Livable World!

You'll find a complete roundup of all key Senate races and key House races below.

Key Senate Races

Maryland

In a race to fill the seat vacated by retiring Democrat Paul Sarbanes, Rep. Ben Cardin defeated former NAACP president Kweisi Mfume in the Democratic primary 46% to 38%. He now moves on to face Lt. Gov. Michael Steele who won handily over other Republicans in the Republican primary. Polls show a very tight race.

Rhode Island

Record-breaking turnout helped incumbent Senator Lincoln Chafee (R) survive a strong primary challenge - 54% to 46% -- from conservative Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey. Chafee moves on to face Sheldon Whitehouse (D). Polls show Chafee and Whitehouse running neck and neck.

New York

Incumbent Senator Hilary Clinton handily defeated anti-war challenger Jonathan Tasini in the Democratic primary, receiving more than 80% of the vote. She now moves on to face John Spencer (R).

Key House Races

AZ 08 (R): Conservative Randy Graf beat moderate Steve Huffman in the Republican primary to replace retiring moderate Republican Rep. Jim Kolbe. He will face Gabrielle Giffords (D), who won decisively in a three-way race, in the primary election.

NH 01 (D): Anti-war candidate Carol Shea-Porter stunned NH House Minority Leader/DCCC endorsee Jim Craig for the Democratic nomination and will face Rep. Jeb Bradley in November.

MD 03 (D): John Sarbanes won a crowded primary for the Democratic nomination to replace Cardin and will likely win in November.

MD 04 (D): Wynn leads Edwards by approximately 1,900 votes with 88% of precincts reporting.

MN 05 (D): Keith Ellison won the Democratic nomination and will likely become the country's first ever Muslim Congressman.

NY 11 (D): Yvette Clarke, who won crowded and nasty primary to replace Major Owens, will also likely win in November.

NY 19 (D): Musician John Hall won the Democratic primary and will face Sue Kelly (R).

WI 08 (D): Self-funder Steve Kagen (D) and John Gard (R) each won their respective primary. They will face off against each other in this Republican leaning district in November.
