House Candidate Profiles
Braley, Bruce
Braley is committed to seeking multilateral solutions to global problems. He advocates active U.S. participation in the United Nations and especially multi-national peacekeeping efforts.
Carson, Julia
Carson has been a consistent vote in favor of sensible national security policies and arms control initiatives. She is a strong opponent of the war in Iraq.
Cranley, John
In the 2000 election, John Cranley came close to defeating Rep. Steve Chabot in Ohio's 1st Congressional District. Running as a political unknown, Cranley held the incumbent Chabot to 53% of the vote. He was subsequently appointed to an at-large seat on the Cincinnati city and has been reelected three times.
Farrell, Diane
The race in Connecticut's 4th Congressional District is extremely close. Challenger Diane Farrell stands a good chance of unseating incumbent Republican Chris Shays. The principal issue in this race is Shays' unwavering support of George W. Bush's policies in Iraq.
Filner, Bob
We need Bob Filner in Congress. His voting record is virtually perfect: against the development of new nuclear weapons, for investigating the treatment of detainees in the battle against terrorists, for increased funding for nuclear non-proliferation programs and for financial support of the United Nations.
Hall, John
Hall won the four-way Democratic primary with a landslide victory and a 100% increase in voter turn-out, with opposition to the Iraq war one of his primary themes. He has long been active on anti-nuclear issues, and has highlighted the relationship between nuclear power and nuclear weapons. A charismatic politician, Hall was a popular musician in the 1970s, and wrote the hit song “Still the One.”
Hooley, Darlene
While her state may be evenly divided politically, Darlene Hooley has never been afraid to take a strong position on arms control and foreign policy issues. She has voted against funding for new nuclear weapons, the missile defense system and weapons in space. She has supported funding for the United Nations.
Lampson, Nick
Lampson is running a strong campaign, and the race for Texas' 22nd district is being closely watched by national observers. Nick Lampson was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1996. He served for eight years before being defeated in 2004, due to a partisan redistricting conspiracy masterminded by Tom DeLay.
Lawsen, Rick
Rick Larsen is serving his third term representing Washington state's northern coast. He has been a strong supporter of responsible foreign policies and sensible measures to reduce the threat of weapons of mass destruction.
Madrid, Patricia
GOP Rep. Heather Wilson is being challenged for reelection by Attorney General Patricia Madrid. First elected in 1998, Madrid is the first woman to serve as Attorney General in New Mexico and the first Hispanic woman to serve as Attorney General in the nation.
Maffei, Dan
Maffei grew up in this district, which includes Syracuse and its environs. He worked for several years as a local television news reporter, before serving on the staffs of Senators Bill Bradley and Patrick Moynihan and Representative Charles Rangel. In 2005, he moved back to Syracuse to manage a successful mayoral campaign that gave him significant political visibility.
Massa, Eric
Eric Massa was in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, and served as a top aid to Gen. Wesley Clarke during the NATO peacekeeping operation in Bosnia. He is now running against Rep. Randy Kuhl in New York's 29th Congressional District.
Matheson, Jim
The lone Democratic Representative in a highly conservative state, Jim Matheson always has close elections. Matheson has been a reliable vote on arms control issues. His strong stance against renewed nuclear testing and building new nuclear weapons has been important in the House of Representatives.
McNerney, Jerry
Jerry McNerney is the CEO of a company that manufactures wind turbines. He won an upset victory in the June Democratic primary and will challenge Republican Rep. Richard Pombo in California's 11th Congressional District. He also ran against Pombo in 2004 at the request of his son, who had joined the Air Force after the 9/11 attacks.
Murphy, Lois
Challenger Lois Murphy won an easy victory in the Democratic primary to run against Representative Jim Gerlach in Pennsylvania's 6th Congressional District. Gerlach has reason to be concerned. In 2004 the then-unknown Murphy came close to defeating him - losing by less than 7,000 votes.
Murphy, Patrick
Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District includes the site where George Washington crossed the Delaware to surprise the English and Hessian forces and win a significant victory on Christmas Day in 1776. Democrat Patrick Murphy is poised to win a similar victory there this November against freshman Republican Representative Mike Fitzpatrick.
Rowley, Coleen
As a career FBI agent, Coleen Rowley spent the months immediately prior to the 9/11 attacks attempting to alert senior agents to her suspicions that Zacarias Mousaoui, the so-called "19th hijacker," was involved in a terrorist plot to hijack airplanes. Rowley is now taking her campaign for honest government and foreign policies to the voters.
Sestak, Joe
The race in Pennsylvania's 7th Congressional District is a fierce struggle. Republican Representative Curt Weldon is fighting for his political life, challenged by a real-life Navy Admiral, Joe Sestak.
Space, Zack
Zack Space is running to give voters of the 18th District an alternative to Ney. Space has publicly pledged not to take gifts, trips or meals from lobbyists, and has promised: "I will never put corporate interests ahead of the people I represent."
Spratt, John
John Spratt was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1982. Over the next twenty years, Spratt established himself as a tireless advocate for arms control and sensible foreign policy.
Sutton, Betty
Sutton will be a reliable vote for sensible foreign policies in the House of Representatives. She opposed the war in Iraq and now believes that Congress must exert its powers to bring the war to an end. Sutton has not shied away from discussing her opposition to the war.
Welch, Peter
Peter Welch, a popular figure currently serving as President Pro Tem of the Vermont Senate, is running to fill the seat of Congressman Bernie Sanders, who is retiring from the House to run for Senate. ""I have been a consistent supporter of Council for Livable World's positions on nuclear non-proliferation, enactment of a comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty, land mines treaty, non-weaponization of space, multilateral U.N. efforts on peacekeeping, and reforming the military budget."
Wetterling, Patty
The contrast between Patty Wetterling and her opponent, Michele Bachmann, could not be more stark. Bachmann is an extremely conservative state legislator who came to office running against a moderate Republican and has been a leading advocate on anti-abortion, taxpayer rights and anti-gay marriage issues. Bachmann is a staunch supporter of the George W. Bush administration.
Woolsey, Lynn
Rep. Woolsey has a remarkable record of leadership on arms control and nuclear disarmament. She introduced House Resolution 191, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Commitments Act, saying: "This resolution will not only ensure America's fulfillment of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, it also encourages the President to lead by example and reduce Amerca's vast nuclear arsenal."
