Darcy Burner (D-WA) for House

Darcy Burner, a former Microsoft Executive, ran against GOP Rep. Dave Reichert in Washington's eighth Congressional District in 2006 with a PeacePAC endorsement. Both national parties invested heavily in the race, one of the most closely watched of that year. Uncounted absentee ballots delayed a decision in the race for a week, but incumbent Reichert eventually emerged with a 51%-49% victory.
Burner immediately announced that she would run again, and her aggressive campaigning in the off-year cleared the field of several potential primary opponents. Significantly, Burner raised more money than Reichert in the fall of 2007, even though Vice-President Cheney held a fundraiser in the district for Reichert.
Burner has made her opposition to the war in Iraq the centerpiece of her campaign. Her position is clear:
"It is long past time we had a realistic plan for returning control of Iraq to the Iraqis and bringing our troops home. I support enforced benchmarks for the Iraqi government to step up to its responsibilities to its people and to us, including benchmarks for bringing our troops home."
Her opponent's position is equally clear. Rep. Reichert has voted with President Bush on every Iraq war vote held in 2007. Reichert claims that "progress in Iraq is evident" and that United States troops must remain there until victory is achieved.
Burner has also taken strong positions on reducing the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal, promoting diplomatic nuclear non-proliferation efforts and opposing the development of new nuclear weapons. She is also a strong advocate for veterans' benefits, particularly for proper care for troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The eighth Congressional District is a classic "battleground" district. Rep. Reichert has never won an election by more than 3% and President Bush lost the district in both his elections. Burner can win this seat, but the campaign will be expensive, because Seattle media is relatively high ariced.
